I figured that this must be a learning experience. One for all of us. I needed to be sensitive to my daughter’s needs. Short of paying for an actual church funeral, I had to treat this similarly, but on a smaller scale, like a real death in the family. We would have a ceremony right there in the home and give Baby 8 a proper send-off and show her our love.

Even though my daughter was young, about three, she seemed comforted by this. She was sad, but she was handling the situation like a little adult. The tears were flowing down her cheeks but she seemed comforted by the opportunity to honor the life of her little baby and have a memorial service for Baby 8.

We pulled together to prepare for the memorial service. I thought that I would get guff from the other kids and laughs and giggles which would have been insensitive under the circumstances. Instead, my older daughter went along with the plan without interruption and my son was also supportive of the memorial service idea. He was somewhat comforting and helpful to his younger sister.

Then, out of the blue, in walked my father. It was surprising because my father did not live in the state. He happened to be visiting and was staying with my sister who was in the same town. So, his arrival was a welcome surprise.

I invited him to our memorial service. He consented.

My father is a gentle man. Well, he is also a gentleman. But, he is also very observant and was always able to apply that creative thinking to my situations as a young girl. There were many times where he was able to solve a problem for me when I was unable to do so as a little girl. That was where I learned the skill of thinking outside the box, was from my father and watching him work.

My father asked if he could look at Baby 8. I looked at my daughter. I wanted to be sure it was ok with her. This was an opportunity to teach respect and how to respect other people and I knew that by showing that to my three-year-old, that she would learn how to respect others in a similar manner. She said it was ok if grandpa looked at Baby 8.

Grandpa took Baby 8 into the bathroom. A few minutes later, Grandpa came out with a fully filled Baby 8!

We were all sitting there, prepared to share stories of our time with Baby 8, at our makeshift memorial service and there was to be no memorial service! She’s alive!

Now came the time to explain all this. Of course, since my daughter was three, she was too busy hugging Baby 8 and happy that her baby was fine. But, we had to close out this whole memorial thing. I thanked my father and explained that Mama is not a doctor and had missed that Baby 8 was only sick and she hadn’t died and that Grandpa gave her mouth-to-mouth or something which I didn’t know, in order to save her. This is where plausible deniability comes into the picture. Obviously, he figured out a way to get water into her and not have it leak but by not asking specifics, I could somehow leave it as Grandpa operating on Baby 8, and he did (technically).

Whatever the case, Baby 8 was alive and that was all that mattered. My two older kids cleaned up their part and we all got ready for dinner. Yes, the six of us, grandpa, our three kids, myself, and Baby 8.

First, let’s get technical. Technically speaking, Baby 8 was a water baby, popular at that time, but not seen these days because of safety issues.

She was preceded by Baby 4, another water baby half her size and given to an older sister. Oh, yeah, Baby 8 belonged to our youngest daughter, well, youngest child. Youngest child, that is, until Baby 8 joined us.

As a side note, Baby 4 actually had no name. She may have been in the house prior to Baby 8, but our youngest named her sister’s doll after Baby 8 joined our family. Since Baby 4 was half the size, it seemed normal that she should be Baby 4.

But, it was Baby 8 who joined us on shopping trips, family travels, and even to church. She wasn’t just a doll… She was truly a member of the family.

Even in the family fan, sometimes the older siblings would grumble wondering why they had to sit in the far back while Baby 8 sat next to our youngest, in her own car seat. Well, said our youngest, because she is part of the family and since she is so little, she needs closer attention (or something like that, in three-year-old language).

Even if the image is not that of Baby 8, it represents Baby 8 for now. When Baby 8 returns (her mama is now off to college), we can give her a bath and take an appropriate photo for this article.

How Baby 8 Got Her Name

Her mama was watching “Herbie” (affiliate link) with the family and asked about the number 5 and 3 on the car. When she learned that that was eight, she became quite taken with the #8. Of course, that should mean that her baby’s name would become Baby 8!

I have to admit…

Even though many of my friends are mommy bloggers, I did not become one, nor have I labeled myself as one, at least not until yesterday.

Even so, I’m not sure if I really have labeled myself as a mommy blogger.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t judge anyone for becoming a mommy blogger. In fact, I really respect mommy bloggers and I think the movement (if that is what is called) has helped other mothers to learn about business and how to make an income, even in-between changing diapers.

And, I have been there. Believe me.

Even if I didn’t label myself as a mommy blogger, I was a freelancer when my children were in diapers.

I think the reason the mommy blogging bug didn’t bite me is that I was so focused on being a businesswoman. Eventually, when my children were teenagers, I guess I got that wish, moving into a corporate c-level position in the financial world.

But, when they were little, it was mommy sitting at the computer, holding the baby on her lap while older siblings were watching Blues Clues.

The Beginning of Mommy Freelancing

Believe it or not, even with my business background, I actually started as a manicurist. Oh, I went for the cosmetologist role, but with a baby on the way, finishing up and getting my licensure for becoming a manicurist was more practical.

I found what I thought was the perfect job, with a sort of on-call type situation where people could make appointments with me at the one salon in the small town, ahead of time, so I had time to drive in and keep the appointment. I even found a babysitter who would watch my children while I worked the hour or two hours for the manicure or artificial nails.

So, why was this not the perfect situation, working part-time and still able to be a stay-at-home mommy to my children?

The small town was not really “into” artificial nails, which made more of a profit then, say, manicures and pedicures. Granted, I really wasn’t that good at artificial nail application so I was actually thankful for the potential clients that did not have to be disappointed! I loved servicing tired hands and feets with the comfort that is provided with a manicure. I was probably guilty of providing the service for 60 minutes and charging for 30 minutes.

So, again, what is wrong with that?

It is in the finances… When you realize that you are paying twice as much for the quality child care as what you are making with your part-time gig, you realize you are not contributing to the family finances.

A Business is Born

It was there that I decided I needed to figure out how to make money with my computer. I had already done some of that, freelancing, prior to getting married. So, now, I just needed to find something that worked with my mommy schedule and made money.

Fortunately, I did discover that.

What I didn’t realize and I do now, in hindsight, is that I was technically functioning as a mommy blogger before the term existed!

Granted, I was also freelancing in other categories, but I began writing. I learned HTML and how to write articles and place them on my sites. This was also before the word “blogging” came on the scene so back then you actually had to know HTML to insert anything on your page.

If any of you were online back then, there were some frightful looking sites back then! Also, SEO, though it sort of existed, hadn’t come into its own as an acronym, let alone methodology.

So, my first few days, weeks, months as a mommy blogger was really just what I described… a freelancer who changed diapers in between gigs. I spent time with my children, played with them, loved them, and then popped over to the computer writing and even designing websites for other future mommy bloggers and businesses.
